Analysis Confirmed

Xbox’s Strategy Chief Says GTA VI Is “Breaking Records for Xbox” — After a Report That Pre-Orders Skew to PS5

The Verge’s Tom Warren reported that Xbox sources say pre-orders are “heavily skewed” to PS5. Matthew Ball replied that Xbox’s share of pre-orders matches its share of the console market. Nobody gave a number.

Confirmed as a statement — Matthew Ball, Xbox’s Chief Strategy Officer, posted it on X on September 24, replying to The Verge’s Tom Warren: “Tom, we are very happy with GTA VI pre-orders. The title is breaking records for XBOX, we expect even more records will be broken throughout the fall, and our internal analysis shows our share of pre-orders to be matching our share of the console market.”

What he was answering. Warren had reported, citing sources at Xbox, that GTA VI pre-orders are “heavily skewed” toward PS5. That report is Reported, not confirmed: it rests on unnamed sources, and Sony has not commented.

The two claims can both be true. PS5 has sold far more consoles than Xbox Series X|S this generation, so pre-orders “matching our share of the console market” would still mean most pre-orders are on PS5. Ball did not dispute that; he disputed that Xbox is doing worse than its install base.

The limit of this story: neither side gave a figure. “Breaking records” is Xbox’s description with no number attached, and we do not know which record. Take-Two has not broken pre-orders down by platform.
