Piper Sandler Now Models 48 Million Copies at Launch — Built on Fan-Community Traffic

Analyst James Callahan raised the bank’s launch estimate to roughly 48 million units, after weekly actives on r/GTA6 roughly doubled to 1.4 million following the August leaks. It is a model, not a sales figure — and the inputs are worth seeing.

Reported — an investment bank’s projection, published to its clients. No copies of GTA VI have been sold to anyone.

The arithmetic, stated plainly: Piper Sandler takes an expected 3.0 million weekly active users at launch and applies a 16× multiple, arriving at roughly 48 million units. The proxy for demand is traffic to the biggest GTA VI fan community, whose weekly active users roughly doubled — about 700,000 to 1.4 million — after the late-August leaks.

The interesting part is the direction of the adjustment. Callahan more than halved his multiple, from 35.5× in June to 16× now. Because the observed traffic came in so far ahead of the earlier model, he could become much more conservative on the multiplier and still clear his previous ~45 million bar. A raised headline number sitting on a lowered assumption is a stronger result than the headline alone suggests.

Read it with the caveats it deserves. Fan-community activity is a proxy for interest, not for purchases; leak-driven traffic is not the same as buying intent; and equity research is written for people trading Take-Two stock, not for people deciding whether to pre-order. Treat 48 million as one bank’s defensible guess, which is exactly what it is.
