You Will Have to Refuel — TGG Timed It at About Ten Seconds, and Rob Nelson Says “You Can’t Complain About That”

Cars in GTA VI use fuel, and electric vehicles need charging. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, asked whether players will like it: “We’ll see what people say.” On the fill-up, which TGG timed at about ten seconds: “that’s pretty fast for a fill-up.”

Reported — the quotes come from TGG’s preview at Rockstar North, which Nelson oversaw, relayed by PC Gamer and GamesRadar+, not from a Rockstar publication. No Newswire post describes the fuel system.

What is described: pull into a gas station and you can repair or refuel. Refuelling is a short prompted animation — you get out of the car, as you would in life — which TGG says lasts roughly ten seconds. Electric vehicles charge at the same stops rather than filling up.

Nelson’s answers. Asked “Do you think people are going to like it?” he replied: “We’ll see what people say.” On the duration: “Hey, that’s pretty fast for a fill-up. You can’t complain about that.” That is a studio head who knows the mechanic is divisive and is saying so.

Context worth keeping straight: fuel surfaced publicly through the August leak wave, ahead of Rockstar’s own schedule, which is why it arrived attached to a backlash rather than to a feature reveal. The obvious open question — what happens when you steal a nearly empty car mid-chase — has not been answered by anyone at Rockstar, and we are not going to answer it for them.

Corrected September 22, 2026: the headline said Rob Nelson gave the ten-second figure. The timing is TGG’s; Nelson’s words were “Hey, that’s pretty fast for a fill-up. You can’t complain about that.”
