Rockstar Tells Famitsu You Can Get Through Fights Without Killing — Suppressive Fire Debuts

In an interview with Japan’s Famitsu, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson describes a series-first suppressive fire mechanic: shoot near an enemy instead of at them to pin or startle them and buy time to escape. “It’s not always easy, but there are many situations where you can get through without killing anyone.”

This is an on-the-record statement from the game’s head of development, published by Famitsu itself (linked first below; quotes translated from the Japanese), which is what earns it a Confirmed tag. Rob Nelson told Famitsu that instead of shooting directly at a target you can deliberately miss and place shots near them, which “may confuse or startle the opponent and allow you time to make your escape.”

In the same interview Nelson ties it to a criminal profile system: lethal choices affect your reputation. Nelson notes that lethal play has consequences for how the world treats you — killing your way out of a store robbery is still possible, it just costs you something this time.

What is not claimed: a full non-lethal playthrough. Nelson’s wording is situational — many encounters can end without a body count, not all of them.
