Edge’s GTA VI Feature: K9 Units, Stinger Strips, Fuel Gauges, Car Trackers, Buses and Trains
Rockstar North’s leads showed Edge a hands-on demo. New details: police dogs, a fuel gauge on every vehicle, a four-point relationship scale and a Criminal Profile.
Confirmed — these come from Rockstar North’s heads of development Rob Nelson, Aaron Garbut and Phil Hooker, in Simon Parkin’s Edge 430 cover feature, published on GamesRadar+. Parts are Edge’s description of a demo Nelson played, and we say so where it matters.
Police. In the demo, police radioed ahead and laid a stinger strip that Edge says was “almost invisible when driving at speed at night.” After the crash a K9 unit joined the chase, and the dog pinned Jason to the ground. Stealing a newer, expensive car can mean a tracker that keeps broadcasting your position, and owners can call in a report.
Getting around. Edge says every vehicle has a fuel gauge and an engine-health readout, though cars go a long way before running low. The game has “fully functioning bus and train systems”. Hooker says he has memorised the routes: “I’m obsessed with making sure they always turn up.”
Jason and Lucia. Their closeness is measured on a four-point scale that grows as they spend time together, for example walks on the beach, cycling or the gym. Nelson would not confirm or deny whether they can marry. A Criminal Profile tracks how you play, and Rockstar says it “will influence how Jason and Lucia’s story unfolds.” Garbut says the game has “an order of magnitude more interiors” than earlier ones. He also describes a disgust reaction, first made for one location, that became a system other places can trigger.
The limit of this story: this is one magazine’s account of a guided demo, not hands-on play by us, and features shown before launch can change. On map size, Edge repeats what Rockstar already told Game Informer: roughly twice GTA V.
