Rockstar Staff Break Their Silence to Dazed — Dual Protagonists You Can Swap Mid-Mission, and Bodies That Change
Rockstar almost never gives interviews. It just gave Dazed a set of them — six named staff, on the record, in the magazine’s Autumn 2026 issue. The concrete new mechanics: you can switch between Jason and Lucia mid-mission, and their bodies react to how you play — food changes weight, exercise builds muscle, and fatigue shows on their faces.
Rob Nelson, Head of Development and Co-Studio Head at Rockstar North, on the weight of following GTA V: “I don’t know that any amount of external pressure could compare with the pressure we put on ourselves.”
On why the protagonists are written rather than blank: “The thing we love about this medium is the way these characters aren’t empty avatars that you can do whatever you want with.” Rupert Humphries, Senior VP of Narrative, calls it a Bonnie and Clyde-type narrative.
What is actually new here
- Swap protagonists mid-mission. Not only between missions, as in GTA V.
- Bodies that change. Food affects weight, exercise builds muscle, fatigue reads on their faces.
- Over 50 real street artists painted the in-game murals.
- The team has more than doubled since Red Dead Redemption 2, and the Los Angeles office is given over almost entirely to NPC design.
- Actual race drivers sit on the vehicle handling team.
Jamie-Lee Lloyd, Senior Art Director for Characters, on the research: “We will meet with ex-criminals, law enforcement, club promoters, gun dealers.” Stylist Jillian Carr, with Rockstar since 2023: “Vice City is built around vanity.”
Why this one matters
Almost everything written about GTA VI this year has come from leaks, or from people guessing. This is Rockstar staff, named, with job titles, in print — the largest set of on-the-record detail since Trailer 2, and none of it needed a leak.
Filed as Reported rather than Confirmed: these are Rockstar employees speaking to a magazine, not an announcement on Rockstar’s Newswire. If Rockstar later contradicts any of it, this entry gets corrected.
