Australia’s Workplace Regulator Uses GTA VI Launch Day to Explain Unpaid Leave

The Fair Work Ombudsman’s Instagram post asks “Can you take unpaid leave?” The answer: there is no general entitlement, so ask your employer.

Reported — GTA BOOM and Dexerto both covered the post on October 8 and link to it on the Fair Work Ombudsman’s Instagram account. We could not open Instagram ourselves, so the wording below is as they quote it.

The post, as quoted by GTA BOOM, opens: “GTA 6 is out tomorrow, but you’ve got no paid leave left. Can you take unpaid leave?” It then goes through the kinds of unpaid leave in Australia’s National Employment Standards and rules each one out. Parental leave, for one, is for a new child.

The answer it lands on: there is no minimum entitlement to general unpaid leave under those standards, so a day off for launch comes down to asking your employer.

The limit of this story: it is a public-information post that borrows the launch date, not a ruling and not advice for any one workplace. It applies to Australia only. GTA VI launches on November 19, 2026.
