“A New Level of Greed” — Fans Push Back on the Extended Look’s Netflix Head Start
The six-hour Netflix exclusive on the Extended Look has a loud chunk of the community calling it a paywalled trailer. “I’m not paying Netflix to specifically watch an ad” is the mood; TechRadar’s headline called it “a new level of greed”. Worth keeping straight: the same video hits YouTube free at 9 p.m. ET the same day.
The reaction to the Extended Look announcement split fast. NME collected the mood: “I am not ever going to pay a Netflix subscription just to watch the trailer”, “I’m not paying Netflix to specifically watch an ad, you guys have lost your freakin’ minds”, and “this has to be the weirdest marketing I’ve ever seen for a videogame”. TechRadar’s headline went with a fan’s “a new level of greed”.
Netflix’s side, via executive Brandon Riegg: the partnership reflects “a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience.”
The factual core, per Rockstar’s own Newswire: Netflix gets the premiere at 3 p.m. ET on 27 August, and the same video lands free on YouTube and the GTA VI site at 9 p.m. ET the same day. A six-hour head start, not an exclusive. (Some coverage has garbled the times — NME, for instance, lists different hours than Rockstar’s announcement. When outlets disagree, we go with Rockstar’s published schedule.)
Whether six hours of streaming exclusivity on a marketing video is “greed” or just 2026 is the argument. That it is the first time Rockstar has premiered GTA footage off its own channels is simply true — see our Extended Look story for the announcement itself.
