The reaction to the Extended Look announcement split fast. NME collected the mood: “I am not ever going to pay a Netflix subscription just to watch the trailer”, “I’m not paying Netflix to specifically watch an ad, you guys have lost your freakin’ minds”, and “this has to be the weirdest marketing I’ve ever seen for a videogame”. TechRadar’s headline went with a fan’s “a new level of greed”.
Netflix’s side, via executive Brandon Riegg: “It’s a reflection of what we hope Netflix is becoming: a place where the most ambitious storytelling, from any medium, can find the biggest possible audience.”
The factual core, per Rockstar’s own Newswire: Netflix gets the premiere at 3 p.m. ET on August 27, and the same video lands free on YouTube and the GTA VI site at 9 p.m. ET the same day.
