Zelnick on Physical Media: “Discs Don't Really Make Sense for the Consumer”

Asked on the Q1 call about reports of Sony winding down physical game production, Take-Two's CEO was blunt: the business is “well over 90 percent digitally distributed as is” — and for a game GTA 6's size, “discs don't really make sense for the consumer”. Which is why the boxed copy is a download code.

This is the philosophy behind a fact our June story documented: the store-shelf copy of GTA 6 contains a download code, not a disc. On the same 7 August earnings call that produced the “exceptional start” pre-order line, Strauss Zelnick was asked about the industry's drift from physical media — reports have Sony ending physical production around 2028 — and answered that with distribution already “well over 90 percent” digital, big-game discs no longer serve the customer.

He left the door ajar for occasional physical editions down the line. For launch, though: pre-load starts 12 November, and the “box” is a code. Plan your bandwidth accordingly.
