The “Welcome to Vice City” Sign Is Now on the Kaseya Center Roof — Lifted Into Place by Helicopter

On Tuesday, September 22 a helicopter lifted the giant pink and white letters onto the Miami Heat’s arena one by one, Local 10 reports. Rockstar still hasn’t said a word about it.

Reported — from Local 10 and CBS Miami, who filmed the installation. Rockstar has published nothing about the sign, and neither report gives the terms of the deal.

What happened: on Tuesday, September 22, a helicopter lifted the “Welcome to Vice City” letters onto the roof of the Kaseya Center one by one, and workers were seen securing them, Local 10 reports. The arena is the county-owned home of the Miami Heat, and the lettering faces up, so it reads best from planes landing in Miami.

How we got here: the sign was photographed under construction in mid-September. At the county’s September 17 budget hearing, the mayor’s chief of staff said Rockstar is paying close to $1 million under a deal the mayor signed without a commission vote. RockstarINTEL cites the Miami Herald for an exact figure of $975,000. We haven’t seen the Herald’s documents ourselves.

Not everyone is happy: Local 10 notes that some county commissioners have objected to the deal, saying the game glorifies violence. CBS Miami adds that Miami’s commissioners separately approved larger-than-normal banners for the campaign, with the permit money going to an Overtown trail.

The limit of this story: the sign is up and on camera. How long it stays, and what else is coming, are not in either report.
