A Rockstar Tribunal Filing Mentions an “Online 32 Player Format” — the First Time It Has Referred to an Online Mode in Public

In documents submitted to the Glasgow employment tribunal, Rockstar describes an “online 32 player format” as being among “the most closely guarded secrets of the company.” It is not a spec sheet — and it does not mean GTA VI Online is capped at 32 players.

Reported — via press coverage of documents filed in the employment tribunal that opened in Glasgow on September 10, the same hearing covered in our story on the 31 dismissed workers.

Rockstar’s own submission describes the dismissed employees discussing unreleased features in a private Discord server, among them “an online 32 player format.” The company’s argument is that this was catastrophic disclosure, and its filing reaches for an analogy to make the point: guarding this material, it says, is “akin to Apple protecting the iPhone or Coke protecting its formula.” One staff member is described as finding the discussion “extraordinarily alarming.”

Why this matters: Rockstar has never publicly acknowledged that an online component of GTA VI exists. Its published position is the opposite — the PlayStation Store FAQ still answers the multiplayer question with “Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.” This filing is the first time the company has, in public, referred to one at all.

Why it is labelled Reported, and what it is not. The phrase confirms that a 32-player format was discussed internally and treated as confidential. It does not confirm that GTA VI Online is a shipping product, that it will launch, that it will be called that, or that it is capped at 32 players — internal formats change, and a document written to argue a dismissal case is not a technical specification. Anyone reporting “GTA 6 Online confirmed at 32 players” has read more into one clause than it carries.

Corrected September 22, 2026: the headline called the filing “Rockstar’s first public acknowledgement of GTA VI Online”. The filing, as reported, says “an online 32 player format”; it does not name GTA VI Online, so the headline now says only what the quote says.
