Stephen Root Confirms He Is in GTA VI — He Did Not Name Brian Heder, Everyone Else Did
Asked by the Associated Press whether he turns up in GTA VI, Root said “Yeah, you’re going to see me in it.” He named no character. Brian Heder is the role fans and press pinned on his voice the day Trailer 2 dropped — and Rockstar has published no cast list.
Confirmed — for exactly what Root said, which is that he is in the game. Asked by the Associated Press on a red carpet over the weekend of September 12–13 whether he turns up in GTA VI, he answered: “Yeah, you’re going to see me in it. It’s coming out November 19, that’s the latest I know of.” He added: “I’m so happy to be involved in it, it’s an amazing thing to look at.”
He did not name a character. Brian Heder is the role everyone else has assigned him — players pinned the voice within hours of Trailer 2 in May 2025, and the outlets ran with it. Root came as close as he could without saying it: “Too many people know me and my voice from King of the Hill, so I think that secret got divulged then.” That is an actor acknowledging the guess, not confirming it.
Who Brian Heder is, per Rockstar: a Rockstar-named character, a drug runner out of the Leonida Keys who moves product through his boatyard and lets Jason live rent-free on his property. He has appeared in Rockstar’s own material since Trailer 2.
The limit of this story: Rockstar has published no cast list for GTA VI and has not commented on any casting. Root confirming his own involvement is as good as a source gets for that one fact. The Heder identification is a voice match nobody serious disputes, and it is still an identification. Every other “confirmed” GTA VI casting circulating right now is a voice somebody thinks they recognise.
Corrected September 16: an earlier version of this headline said Root confirmed he plays Brian Heder. He confirmed he is in the game; the role is an identification by fans and press, not his words or Rockstar’s.
Corrected September 22, 2026: this story dated Root’s remarks September 14. NME, which published that day, says he was asked “over the weekend”.
