Rockstar Publishes Mod Guidelines: No Story Mods, No Ports to Unreleased Platforms, Money Only Through Its Creator Platform
A new Mod Guidelines page on rockstargames.com, dated September 10, bans mods that extend Rockstar’s storylines, mix one Rockstar game into another, or run a game on hardware it was never released on. It does not mention GTA VI.
Confirmed — the rules are on Rockstar’s own site, on a page titled Mod Guidelines and dated September 10, 2026. Outlets noticed it on September 20–21 and framed it as preparation for GTA VI; that framing is theirs, not Rockstar’s.
What it bans, in Rockstar’s words: mods that “expand or modify Rockstar Games’ official storylines, plots, missions, characters, or other elements of our established continuity”; mods that combine maps, characters or other IP “from one Rockstar Games title into another title”; and modifying games “to operate on consoles, hardware devices, or other platforms where they have not been officially released”. It also rules out reusing voice performances from any Rockstar game, cheat menus that interfere with official online services, and “conflict roleplay or military simulations depicting real-world armed organizations”.
Money: “Multiplayer modding is limited to Rockstar Games’ official licensed Creator Platform”, and unless permitted there, “all modding must be strictly non-commercial.” Loot boxes, gacha, selling in-game currency for real money, crypto and NFTs, and sponsored or advertising mods are all out.
The limit of this story: the page names no game beyond the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption series in general, and calls itself a summary — “These Mod Guidelines Are Not a License”. It says nothing about whether GTA VI will support mods, or when it reaches PC. We have not seen an earlier version of the page, so we cannot say what, if anything, changed.
