Rockstar’s Rupert Humphries: GTA VI Doesn’t Want to Be “Too Specific About Any Particular Person, Event, Movement”

Rockstar’s head of narrative tells LOVE Magazine the satire stays “larger than life” rather than mirroring real people or events, as quoted by VGC.

Reported — Rupert Humphries, Rockstar’s senior vice president of narrative, said this to LOVE Issue 27, out October 5, as quoted by VGC the same day. We have not read the magazine itself.

What he says, as quoted: “Because we are trying to make games that feel very specific to the moment they are released, but at the same time, not reflective of the exact world we live in, we don’t want to be too specific about any particular person, event, movement, or anything like that.”

The approach: “There is a big focus on not just holding up a mirror, but on making everything satirical, larger than life, and more grotesque.” He adds that earlier GTAs had “never really been much focus on national politics,” and that because the game takes years, “you need to make content that will feel vital to the moment of release.” RockstarINTEL quotes him saying the world still carries “signs for elections, robocalls from campaigns, or commercials on the radio.”

The limit of this story: second-hand quotes about the writing approach; they do not say what any in-game satire is about.
