Rockstar Confirms the Next Grand Theft Auto Is “Well Underway”
A Rockstar Newswire post on February 4, 2022, mostly about GTA V’s next-gen release, carried the first official word on a new GTA. No name, no setting, no date.
Confirmed — Rockstar said it itself, on the Rockstar Newswire, on February 4, 2022. It was the first official confirmation that a new Grand Theft Auto was in development.
What it said: “With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered—and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details.”
Where it appeared: inside a community update whose main news was the release date for GTA V on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. GTA V had first launched in September 2013.
The limit of this story: the post gave no title, setting, platforms or date. The name Grand Theft Auto VI, Leonida and Vice City came with Trailer 1 in December 2023.
