No Microtransactions and No Generative AI in the Story Mode, Rob Nelson Told Kinda Funny
Rob Nelson told Kinda Funny at Rockstar North that there is no way to spend real money in the single-player game, and that no generative AI was used to build it. Both answers come from Kinda Funny’s own account of its preview, not from a published interview.
Reported — Kinda Funny described these answers in its video about its preview at Rockstar North, and outlets relayed them; no transcript of the conversation has been published. By Kinda Funny’s account, Andy Cortez asked whether real-world money buys anything in the game and got no monetization; Greg Miller asked about generative AI and got a flat “No” — meaning generative tooling, not the behaviour systems that drive the crowds.
The scope is the important part, and it is narrow on purpose. This covers the single-player game shipping November 19 and nothing else. When Kinda Funny raised the next version of GTA Online, Rockstar declined to discuss it. Online has sold real-money currency packs for more than a decade, and that is where this series has always kept its monetisation.
So the honest reading: story mode has no storefront, and Rockstar has said nothing at all about Online. Treat any headline that drops the words “single-player” as having lost the only qualifier that matters.
Corrected September 22, 2026: this story was labelled Confirmed and called the exchange a recorded interview. It is Kinda Funny’s account of a preview conversation, relayed by outlets, so it is now Reported. We have also removed wording that read as a direct quote but was a paraphrase.
