Miami-Dade Commissioners Push Back on Vice City at the Airport and Port; the Next Meeting Is October 20

The Miamian reports a plan to dress county facilities as Vice City is “in serious jeopardy.” Separately, Miami Beach’s deal is reported as still unsigned.

Reported — the county account comes from The Miamian, a local outlet, published October 9. We read its report; we have not watched the meeting or seen county records.

The county plan. The Miamian says Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s staff have been negotiating for Rockstar to pay Miami-Dade to temporarily turn parts of Miami International Airport, PortMiami, Metromover stations and other public facilities into Vice City installations. At a commission meeting last week several commissioners objected.

On the record, as quoted by The Miamian: Commissioner Rene Garcia said “I feel really uncomfortable with this whole thing,” and that the county should not work with a “game that’s depicting Miami like a crime haven; Miami like a murder capital.” Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins pointed to a county policy against advertising that promotes violence.

What happened procedurally. The outlet reports that a move by Chairman Anthony Rodriguez to let the mayor negotiate an agreement worth more than $1 million nearly became an outright ban, and that Commissioner Oliver Gilbert delayed a vote that would have ended the talks. The commission next meets on October 20. Nothing has been decided.

Miami Beach, separately. GTA BOOM reports that journalist Joel Franco says a Miami Beach official told him the city has not yet signed its marketing agreement, so branding on beach chairs and umbrellas will “most likely not” start on October 15. That rests on one reporter’s post, which we have not confirmed. It fits what we wrote on September 11: the commission’s 4–3 vote authorised negotiation, not a signed contract.

The limit of this story: neither item is a final decision, and Rockstar has not commented on either. The Kaseya Center sign and the Miami HEAT’s November 18 “A Night in Vice City” game are separate arrangements and are not affected by these reports.
