Digital Foundry Doesn’t Think the GTA VI Launch Trailer Uses the PS5’s New QSSR Upscaler

“I don’t think we’re seeing it here,” says Rich Leadbetter. It is an expert reading of the trailer, not a statement from Rockstar.

This is Reported: it is Digital Foundry’s analysis of the October 15 Launch Trailer, written up by Push Square. Rockstar has said nothing about which upscaler GTA VI uses.

QSSR is Sony’s new upscaler for the standard PS5, a version of the PS5 Pro’s PSSR. Push Square says it is so far used only in first-party games, Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, and that Sony plans to offer it to other developers.

Looking at the trailer, Digital Foundry’s Rich Leadbetter said: “I don’t think we’re seeing it here.” He also asked, “If the internal rendering resolution is 1440p, then what is QSSR doing?”, and estimated that a 4K upscale would cost about 4 ms of a 33 ms frame, which he called “quite extravagant”. That fits Digital Foundry’s earlier estimate of native 1440p at 30 FPS on a base PS5.

The limit: he said “I don’t think”, not that it is certain, and the trailer may have been captured from older builds. What the final game does on November 19 is not known.
